How to start preparing for the next major ARC grant rounds

Many of the ARC grant rounds, e.g. Discovery Project grants, Linkage Project Grants round 1, Linkage International (Awards, Fellowships ICI’s) and Linkage Infrastructure and equipment close in first half of each year. This session will look at the funding that is available in the ARC system, where to apply for what and how departments and individual researchers can start preparing at least six months ahead; ways to decide which scheme(s) to target; and how to obtain required co-investment, build a strong group of collaborators; 'headhunting' prospective postdocs and international fellows; work shopping proposals; and building up grant reader and mentor schemes.

ARC Linkage Project Information Session

Successful Linkage applicants from previous rounds will discuss the development of their projects from initial contact with partner organisations, through to preparation of applications, post-award project management, and ongoing relationship management with partners. Prospective applicants will be encouraged to engage with the Linkage scheme and to think about making connections with potential business, government and industry partners, and preparing a competitive application. We will also hear from a representative of one of the many partner organisations working with the University on Linkage projects about the mutual benefits of the scheme. Speakers will then join a panel to address questions. Refreshments will be provided after this session which will give you the opportunity to discuss matters on a more informal basis with members of the panel and to seek advice from Research Office staff on any aspect of the application process.

Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grant Scheme - Information Session

The Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grant Scheme is a University scheme supported by both central and faculty funds. This Scheme is a core part of the University's research development strategy, which places a high priority on the support of Early Career Researchers (ECR).

Initially, applications will be assessed on a competitive basis by a committee established by each faculty. Applications recommended by faculties will then proceed to the ECR Grant Scheme (central) Committee of RAGS for final consideration.

This session will review the aims of the Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grant Scheme, how to apply, online submission and tracking your application in Self Service. Prospective applicants and administrators are invited to attend.

Applications for 2009 Early Career Researcher Grants are due at faculties by Monday 14 July 2008.

NHMRC Information Session - Handling Assessors Comments and Preparing an Applicant Response

ARC Linkage-International Program - Information Session

The ARC Linkage-International Program has two categories of support for funding in 2009 i) Linkage International Fellowships (ARCIFs) which provides support for visiting fellows from overseas to Australia, and fellowships to fund Australian-based researchers to work overseas, and ii) Linkage International Internationally Coordinated Initiatives (ICIs), with a current call for proposals for Linkage International Social Sciences Collaboration, a joint initiative between the ARC and the Economic and Social Research Council of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (ESRC) in the field of Social Sciences. How to determine what regulatory approvals you need for your research

An overview of the regulatory system that controls research activity in Australia. Provides a brief introduction to human ethics, animal ethics and welfare, gene technology, biosafety, MTAs and contracts and others. The session is aimed at new researchers, researchers starting new projects with different or several types of approval required, and research admin staff who might benefit from an overview of the system. Common causes of the "regulatory blues" will be discussed, but details of application procedures and processes will be provided in specific "How to" sessions scheduled later in the year.

ARC Linkage Project Information Session

A general, introductory workshop for professional staff of all HEW levels in departments and faculties new or relatively new to the world of research grants, contracts and consultancies.

We will look at what these terms mean; why research funds and activities take these different forms; where research grants, contracts and consultancies fit in the cycle of research and research training; and what roles in grants, contracts and consultancies are typically played by (a) academics, (b) professional staff in faculties and academic departments, and (c) professional staff in the University Administration or the University’s commercial arms.

NHMRC Information Session - Handling Assessors Comments and Preparing an Applicant Response

From 28 May 2007 the NHMRC will commence forwarding Grant Review Panel Questions and Comments to applicants regarding their Project Grant submissions for funding to commence in 2008. The Questions and Comments are being forwarded to Chief Investigator A as listed on the application.

An important part of successful response writing is feed-back and constructive support from collaborators and peers. There will be presentations from Dr Marjorie Dunlop (MDHS), Professor Joel Bornstein (MDHS) and Adriaan Adolph (Research Office).

Research Quality Framework Open Forum: How is Melbourne Preparing for the RQF?

Professor John McKenzie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Dr Glenn Swafford, Vice-Principal (Research) will host this forum on the latest developments in the Government’s RQF exercise and how the University of Melbourne is preparing for its implementation. At the forum some of Melbourne's RQF Panel Coordinators will speak about the steps they are taking to identify ‘research groups’ for the RQF submission. There will also be an interim report on what we are learning from the University’s participation in DEST's Pre-Implementation RQF Trial. The session will include time for questions and discussion.
